I often had problems with my phone discharging the Mavic Pro remote when the phone was low on battery. Many will say, why did you not charge your phone? Well, I didn’t and I guess many of you Android users have been in the same situation where you have to go fly by the end of the day and you have been abusing your phone during the day with little battery left. I have experienced to be reduced to only 1,5 battery because of that.

There are many opinions about that, and all sort of mumbo-jumbo solutions were rooting your android device is one of them? But don’t worry it’s not so complicated, you need Mavic Pro Remote, Power bank, 2x USB cables, and the Android Phone

First, you hook up the phone to the bottom USB port.
Next, you connect the power bank to the side of the remote.

In this way, you will run out of Mavic batteries long before your remote dies.

Viola, that’s it

DJI Mavic Pro 9 Month Review

What I’m about to tell you to know might change your view on the Mavic Pro forever. This Mavic Pro 9 Month Review is NOT the usual review praising the unit to the sky by mentioned all the great features you can read about on the DJI website. STOP watching NOW if you CAN’T handle the truth.

It’s around 12 months since the DJI Mavic Pro was announced. I have been using it since the beginning of this year. I think now is the time, to tell the truth about owning Mavic Pro. This 9 month review Mavic Pro will cover the dark side of drone so you know what to expect when purchasing.

Mavic Pro 9 Month Review

Aperture can’t be changed, so one important part is missing in the exposure triangle to have full control of your shooting. Aperture is basically how much light the lens lets into the sensor. This can be solved by separately purchasing ND filters adding 50USD to your drone to take full advantage of the camera.

We have covered ND filters in a tutorial:

Mavic comes with a lot of camera settings, that can very overwhelming. Most disappointing is the handling of digital sharpness in the image. Using default sharpness of 0 or -1 produces blurry and muddy images, this can’t be fixed in post production. Be aware of this.

This is great video about Digital Sharpness Mavic Pro made by The Film Poets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEQvOAsY6ks

I understand that DJI had to do some compromises to make the Mavic Pro compact, but the gimbal construction is simply too weak and fragile. Many users have reported problems with the gimbal after crashes and that is somehow understandable.

My gimbal stopped working one morning where I had to do a job. It would NOT initialise, giving me the dreaded gimbal overload error message. This happened despite no previous crashed, not apparent mechanical defects and with the latest firmware. This is not good and it has to be taken back to the store to be fixed.

The protective cover could not be mounted after a few weeks of use because the tabs that hold the cover in place decided to break off. We have a project on Thingiverse, a 3d lens shade/cover you use instead of the original. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2093556

Besides the gimbal has not been programmed to make the footage smooth right out of the box, as the gimbal moves too fast, and it starts/stops to rapidly. This is an easy fix the gimbal parameters through the DJI app.

Watch the video hot to Make gimbal motion smooth:

The GPS on the Mavic Pro does a great job most of the time, but I have experienced it fails when flying Sports Mode with a rapid change of direction. This is extremely dangerous because Mavic will go into ATTI mode and start drifting in the direction it was last moving. It will continue to do that even if you stop touching the sticks.

DJI claims the flight time is around 27min on a single charge, with my usage it’s around 22 min. It’s still decent, and you can always buy more battery packs to extend your flight time. But the truth is in reality 1 hour of continuous flight seems to be the limit no matter the number of batteries. The remote is the limiting factor by not having an exchangeable battery. If that wasn’t enough if your phone is not fully charged the remote will try to charge it, draining the battery even faster.

One day, without any apparent reason Mavic lost its vision calibration for the downwards sensors. I did struggle a fair bit to get this problem fixed. It involved a computer and the DJI Assistant 2 software to make it work.

If you have problems performing this operation take a look at the Tutorial we have made to show the calibration process.

The possibility to record real 4k combined with the intelligent flight modes are hard to beat at this price level. The compact design makes it highly portable and makes you want to take it with you anywhere. You know what they say, the best camera is the one you have with you. As promised in the beginning of the video, my recommendation is still to go for the Mavic Pro as this is the best drone on the market. Yes, there are some issues, but if you are prepared to handle those you will have a blast.

While recording this video DJI released a new firmware for Mavic pro that might solve some of the issues described in this video. Check the video made by Billy K, to see what is new.

Mavic Pro 9 Month Review

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum – This is not the Mavic Pro 2 but yesterday DJI announced an upgraded Mavic Pro version. The Mavic Pro Platinum has been rumored for a while, but now it’s a reality. I was wondering if the pushed it now to be able to announce on IFA 2017, the big European electronic fair hearing right now in Berlin.

I’m Henrik Olsen from Drones & Electric Unicycles. If you are new around here, then consider subscribing by hitting the subscribe button below to get weekly tips and tutorial to help you get the best out of your drones and ewheels.

So what do we know how to know the difference between the traditional Mavic Pro and the Mavic Platinum. There are supposed to 4 things that set them apart as the basic airframe is the same in terms of size and weight.

Different prop design that should lower the noise with up 60%. I did think about this in the past, but who could complain about this initiative and I guess flying around people it’s an advantage. They way they obtained this is by altering the tip of the prop, with a different design that does not make as much noise a the traditional one.

More important the new prop design and prolonged the flight time to stunning 30 min. We all impressed with the original 27 min, can we squeeze an extra 3 min out of the same battery this will simply be fantastic. Another nice touch is you can use the new props on your old Mavic, and you should get some of the advantages in terms of noise reduction, but not the full extra flight time. I guess they have modified the motor controls or ESC’s as well to gain the 3 extra min.

3. They changed the color of Mavic Pro to a more platinum look, that I guess is pretty nice, but not really a deal maker for me. It’s nice but not a big deal. Rumors say there is a matching remote that this platinum, but I have not been able to find pictures of it so far.

4. Last is Is the price it seems these new benefits add’s another 100USd to the original price tag of the Mavic Pro, so the Mavic Pro Platinum comes in around 1099, and the combo is 1399.

You can use your old batteries in the new Mavic Pro Platinum, but of course, the color will not match, but really nice they kept the backward compatibility

The Mavic Pro Platinum shares the same Forward Vision System and Downward Vision System as the Mavic Pro.

I want to add that all of this until now based on rumors picked up on the internet, and it will be interesting to see the new specs in action. I know many of you had expected the Mavic Pro 2, but this is not likely to happen before the first half of 2018.

Hope you liked this short video about DJI Mavic Pro Platinum. What do you think about the new drone from DJI, leave a comment in the comment section below?

Have a nice one and see you on the next one.
