I often had problems with my phone discharging the Mavic Pro remote when the phone was low on battery. Many will say, why did you not charge your phone? Well, I didn’t and I guess many of you Android users have been in the same situation where you have to go fly by the end of the day and you have been abusing your phone during the day with little battery left. I have experienced to be reduced to only 1,5 battery because of that.

There are many opinions about that, and all sort of mumbo-jumbo solutions were rooting your android device is one of them? But don’t worry it’s not so complicated, you need Mavic Pro Remote, Power bank, 2x USB cables, and the Android Phone

First, you hook up the phone to the bottom USB port.
Next, you connect the power bank to the side of the remote.

In this way, you will run out of Mavic batteries long before your remote dies.

Viola, that’s it

Beginner Drone Pilot Mistakes – Are YOU guilty?

With the huge success of commercial drones like DJI Mavic Pro, many new pilots have entered the hobby with little or no experience in flying drones. Unfortunately, this means a lot of crashes too. Are you guys are doomed to make one of the beginner drone pilot mistakes covered in this video. Watch along and see if you are guilty in one of these common drone pilot mistakes?

Most crashes are related to pilot mistakes either due to failed judgment or not knowing the expected behavior or limitation of your drone. Most will say that you need to read the manual before first flight. I can only recommend that doing that, by reading the manual you have a rough idea what your drone is capable of.

But let’s be realistic many pilots are not doing this. Watch this countdown of 9 drone pilot mistakes. If you can avoid these they might help you save your precious aircraft.

Even knowing the manual, will not help you when things start to go wrong. Remember in some cases you only have a fraction of a moment to react. This makes many drone pilots panic and acts irrational that will make them crash. The best thing is to avoid putting yourself in a situation where that put you under pressure.

Countdown: Beginner drone pilot mistakes
9. CSC – Combination Stick Command.
8. Unsuited flying conditions or environment
7. Disoriented
6. Not understanding RTH – Return to Home
5. Trusting the Sensors
4. Flying Backward
3. Flying batteries too low.
2. Returning Nose in
1. Indoor flying

Thank you and I hope to have contributions to make your drone flight a little bit safer and help you prevent potential crashes with this 9 drone pilot mistakes countdown.

Not all pilots will crash their drones because of the mistakes in this video. This video does not cover all possible scenarios.
This video is primarily based on experience with Mavic Pro beginner mistakes, but would more or less apply to any other DJI product or like. Finally, the list does not cover crashes caused by electrical and mechanical errors. It’s made under the assumption you have a well-working aircraft with propellers intact etc.

DJI Mavic Pro 9 Month Review

What I’m about to tell you to know might change your view on the Mavic Pro forever. This Mavic Pro 9 Month Review is NOT the usual review praising the unit to the sky by mentioned all the great features you can read about on the DJI website. STOP watching NOW if you CAN’T handle the truth.

It’s around 12 months since the DJI Mavic Pro was announced. I have been using it since the beginning of this year. I think now is the time, to tell the truth about owning Mavic Pro. This 9 month review Mavic Pro will cover the dark side of drone so you know what to expect when purchasing.

CAMERA:

Aperture can’t be changed, so one important part is missing in the exposure triangle to have full control of your shooting. Aperture is basically how much light the lens lets into the sensor. This can be solved by separately purchasing ND filters adding 50USD to your drone to take full advantage of the camera.

We have covered ND filters in a tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUNeCMxh5yU

DIGITAL SHARPNESS:

Mavic comes with a lot of camera settings, that can very overwhelming. Most disappointing is the handling of digital sharpness in the image. Using default sharpness of 0 or -1 produces blurry and muddy images, this can’t be fixed in post production. Be aware of this.

This is great video about Digital Sharpness Mavic Pro made by The Film Poets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEQvOAsY6ks

GIMBAL:

I understand that DJI had to do some compromises to make the Mavic Pro compact, but the gimbal construction is simply too weak and fragile. Many users have reported problems with the gimbal after crashes and that is somehow understandable.

My gimbal stopped working one morning where I had to do a job. It would NOT initialise, giving me the dreaded gimbal overload error message. This happened despite no previous crashed, not apparent mechanical defects and with the latest firmware. This is not good and it has to be taken back to the store to be fixed.

The protective cover could not be mounted after a few weeks of use because the tabs that hold the cover in place decided to break off. We have a project on Thingiverse, a 3d lens shade/cover you use instead of the original. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2093556

Besides the gimbal has not been programmed to make the footage smooth right out of the box, as the gimbal moves too fast, and it starts/stops to rapidly. This is an easy fix the gimbal parameters through the DJI app.

Watch the video hot to Make gimbal motion smooth:

GPS:

The GPS on the Mavic Pro does a great job most of the time, but I have experienced it fails when flying Sports Mode with a rapid change of direction. This is extremely dangerous because Mavic will go into ATTI mode and start drifting in the direction it was last moving. It will continue to do that even if you stop touching the sticks.

FLIGHT TIME:

DJI claims the flight time is around 27min on a single charge, with my usage it’s around 22 min. It’s still decent, and you can always buy more battery packs to extend your flight time. But the truth is in reality 1 hour of continuous flight seems to be the limit no matter the number of batteries. The remote is the limiting factor by not having an exchangeable battery. If that wasn’t enough if your phone is not fully charged the remote will try to charge it, draining the battery even faster.

SENSORS:

One day, without any apparent reason Mavic lost its vision calibration for the downwards sensors. I did struggle a fair bit to get this problem fixed. It involved a computer and the DJI Assistant 2 software to make it work.

If you have problems performing this operation take a look at the Tutorial we have made to show the calibration process.

The possibility to record real 4k combined with the intelligent flight modes are hard to beat at this price level. The compact design makes it highly portable and makes you want to take it with you anywhere. You know what they say, the best camera is the one you have with you. As promised in the beginning of the video, my recommendation is still to go for the Mavic Pro as this is the best drone on the market. Yes, there are some issues, but if you are prepared to handle those you will have a blast.

While recording this video DJI released a new firmware for Mavic pro that might solve some of the issues described in this video. Check the video made by Billy K, to see what is new.
